If tModLoader doesn't work, of course check for the ports 7777 to be opened assuming your using the default port. The mods should auto download and enable/disable when attempting to join a server, but Tmodloader usually crashes when entering. But, as long as they try again after it crashes straight away, they should join with no problems.
